are all worm castings the same

Worm castings are the secret ingredient that can help get your plant's growth get kicked into high gear. However, not every kind of worm castings are the same. In a way, they're kind of like pizza. It's all pretty good, but some are just amazing compared to others. So what do you need to be aware of when looking at the various earthworm castings options out there?

Food Source

Just like when buying regular manure, you want to see what the animal that produced it has been eating. If you bought cow manure to fertilize your garden, you wouldn't want to see that the cows had been eating nothing but radioactive waste for the last year (an extreme example, but you get the point).

Some worm castings are essentially no different than compost, because the worms were eating nothing but junk. Table scraps, yard clippings with pesticides, and other organic waste isn't what you want in your castings.

The purer the food source, the better your results will be in the garden later on. If the worm castings provider doesn't make it known what they're feeding the worms...there's a good chance that it's probably not something you want them to be eating.

Percentage of Purity

Another big variable when it comes to buying worm castings is how much you're actually getting in the bag. A lot of producers will put a mixture of castings and dirt in the bag and call it worm castings.

The ratio of castings to dirt is better in some than in others. There are products out there that are only 80% worm castings with the rest being a combination of dirt, bedding, tiny rocks, and other junk. If you're wanting to get the best organic fertilizer for your plants, you don't want half the bag to be dirt and pebbles.

When you're after worm castings, look for a product that is 100% earthworm castings. Again, if it doesn't mention the percentage, they're probably not very proud of it.

Worm Bedding

While producing the worm castings, worms are placed into some type of bedding so that they can do their work of breaking down organic material. Although there are a lot of different types of bedding that can be used, some are better than others. The bedding helps contribute to the quality of the end product.

For example, peat humus or rich, dark soil as a bedding is going to yield better results than silt or sandy soil. You might not always know what kind of bedding was used, but it can have an impact on the quality of the worm castings that are ultimately produced.

Trusted Brand

Earthworm castings have become a popular organic fertilizer in recent years and with that increase in popularity have come more producers of castings. Because of this, some less-than-reputable producers have made their way into the market.

If you're going to invest your hard-earned money into a plant food, you don't want to give it to a company that doesn't stand behind their product. The best earthworm castings providers are transparent about their process, the level of purity of the castings, and are there when you need them.
